SP15 Surround & Center
The SP15 surround and the SP15c center channel speakers were designed for multichannel cinema application. They have an omnidirectional dispersion pattern precisely for covering a wide listening area. The point is to deliver broad, equally balanced sound to every listener in the room, not just the one person sitting smack in the center.
Surround channels are for recreating ambient sound effects. This is best done when the speakers are non-directional. With up-firing drivers most of the sound is indirect, reflected and diffused. This envelopes listeners in a more encompassing soundfield. The center channel speaker is shorter to provide more direct sound, but also to place it just at the edge of the video screen, allowing dialog to sound more like it's coming from the actors mouths rather than from a speaker above or below the image. . Most of the time the demand on center and surround speakers is low. Dialog isn't demanding; surround effects are fleeting. But there are times when the program calls for more. Minimum requirements must be exceeded. If the speakers draw attention to themselves because they are too obviously locatable or driven to distortion, they won't be performing their duties up to the required standards. .. . . . Surround speakers should be audibly 'invisible.' The SP15s have the power handing necessary and the non-direct, omnidirectional dispersion to readily fool the ear into believing the surround channel effects are right there in the room with you. . . .
